It was a very exhausting day for Transition Year students on Monday 10th of October as they hiked an astounding 18.5km through the Dublin Mountains. All TYs were in good spirits and persevered through tough trails for World Mental Health Day. This was the first hiking trip of the Year so far, and was going to serve as preparation for the TYs heading to the Camino in Spain next year.
The hike was from Tibradden Wood up to Fairy Castle before descending towards Johnny Fox’s in Glencullen. However, we accidentally made a detour and ended up in the wrong place entirely. This almost felt like a personification of World Mental Health Day in a way, as Mental Health is all about being resilient, even when things don’t go your way. The pure joy of being able to get on the bus is also akin to the rewards reaped when persevering through difficulty.
All in all, this was a fantastic day out, and even though it was difficult to get up the next morning, this is a trip that will be etched in the memories of all who went on it.
